My Story

Fernanda is shy and quiet at first, but once she feels safe, her playful spirit begins to shine. She’s the younger sister of Paulino, and both are now in our care at Open Arms — a place that has become their refuge after an incredibly difficult year.

After being kicked out of their home in Oaxaca, Fernanda’s mom brought her and Paulino to Baja California in search of a new beginning. Before finding Open Arms, they were watched over by a cousin who was barely older than they were. It’s a heartbreaking reality here — children sacrificing their childhoods to care for each other while parents work long hours just to survive.

Now, Fernanda is safe. She has the space to grow, to trust, and to be a little girl again.
